AP: Checkpost staffer commits suicide due to cop’s crookedness

A smalltime employee working in agricultural market committee checkpost in Gudlur mandal of Sree Potti Sreeramulu Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh killed himself allegedly due to the harassment meted out by Sub-Inspector Lakshman.

It is said the victim, 38-year-old P Suresh Babu of Gundlapalem village, worked as assistant in the Thettu check post. He was on duty on at the checkpost on the night of April 11 when Sub-Inspector, Lakshman picked him up and took him to the police station.

Suresh reportedly told the police official that he was discharging his legitimate duty at the checkpost. However, the police official allegedly beat up Suresh and abused him in foul language accusing him with stopping the trucks under drunken condition. Suresh allegedly suffered minor fracture on his wrist.

The SI detained Suresh all the night and let him go the next day morning. Out of fear, he remained indoors for two days and requested his relatives to bring back his two wheeler and mobile phone from the police station.

However, SI is said to have told the relatives of Suresh that he will book a case of drunken drive against him. Afraid of being beaten up again if he went to police station, Suresh hanged himself to death.

His family found a suicide note in which Suresh stated that, “The SI was harassing him to inform him about trucks ferrying subsidized rice. He beat me up on the day of Ramzan when I was on duty. Lakshman Sir is responsible for my death. Please change your behaviour at least following my death.”

The residents of Gundlapalem placed the body of Suresh in front of police station and staged protest against the high-handedness of the SI. Consequently, Lakshman fled the police station.
