Yet another student commits suicide in Kota

More than 150 students end lives in 12 years

An aspirant of NEET committed suicide hanging himself in Kota on Sunday, the coaching hub of India.
The student, Pushpendra Singh had come to Kota seven days back for NEET coaching. He was living in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in a hostel with his uncle’s son .
Pushpendra hanged himself on Sunday when cousin had gone to the market. On return, Pushpendra’s cousin found the door of the room closed. He called Pushpendra, but when the door did not open, he called the hostel operator and informed about the closure of the door.
The hostel operator smashed open the door only to see that Pushpendra was hanging. Police reached the spot on receiving the information, while the relatives reached Kota from Jalore on Monday morning. Police got the postmortem done and handed over the body to the relatives.
No suicide note has been found from the student yet, police said.
Meanwhile, Pushpendra’s uncle question why are the children committing suicide in Kota. “It has been only seven days since our child came here. Now tell me, who should be held responsible. Kota, hostel, coaching or whom. We want the cause to be investigated and the truth to come out,” he said.
Ironically, as many as 16 students cases have been reported in Kota in which students have committed suicide in the last six months.
A 16-year-old student, Saumya Kumari of Jharkhand, who committed suicide in Kota some time ago, left a suicide note. She wrote in the suicide note that, “Sometimes, students who come from outside find it difficult to cope with peer pressure and parental expectations.”
Many students from states such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand feel immense pressure arising from their parents’ expectations, peer pressure, extensive syllabus, and the distinct teaching methodologies in Kota.
Twenty students committed suicide in Kota last year, while four students died by suicide in 2021 as most of them left Kota for their hometowns due to Covid. More than 150 students committed suicide in Kota in the last 12 years.
Some analysts say that Kota’s coaching industry has become a money-minting business where lakhs of students come every year to fulfil their dreams or their parents’ dreams. But some of them end their lives as they feel lost in the cometitive environment.
