Honour Killing: Man strangled to death in Telangana

In what appears to be a case of honour killing, two brothers killed their brother-in-law just a month after he married their cousin sister.
This gory incident came to light on Friday. According to police, 20-year-old Paddam Ungaiah of Chirutanupadu village in Palvancha mandal of Bhadradri Kothagudem district was in love with Madavi Ungi. He married her just a month ago.
Since Ungi’s family members were against the love marriage, they complained to the caste elders following which a ‘panchayat’ (meeting) was held two days after the marriage. The panchayat imposed a fine of Rs. 1.5 lakh on Ungaiah charging him with marrying a woman who is ‘aunt’ to him in relation.
Ungaiah, who was deeply in love with Ungi, managed to pay Rs. 1.2 lakh on the same day and took his wife with him. However, Ungi’s cousin brothers – Idamaiah, Adamaiah and another person went to Ungaiah’s house on April 26 demanding him to pay the remaining fine amount of Rs. 30,000.
But Ungaiah expressed helplessness saying that he did not have the money. Consequently, the cousin brothers forcibly whisked away Ungi to her maternal home. But the woman vanished on the same day. Her cousin brothers began searching for Ungi when they spotted Ungaiah near Chirutanupadu. The duo picked up an argument with him and out of anger, strangled him to death using a towel.
Later, the duo hanged the body to a tree in an apparent attempt to make it look like a case of suicide. However, Ungaiah’s family lodged a missing complaint on April 30 but the next day found his body hanging from the tree. They expressed doubts over his death following which police launched investigation.
As part of the probe, police questioned one of the cousin brothers of Ungi named Idamaiah when he spilled the beans. He was taken into custody, while another accused Adamaiah is absconding, police said.
